Nigeria's NigComSat-1R, which is a hybrid geostationary satellite located at an orbital position
of 42.50 E with a life span of at least 15 years, a total of 40
transponders can now officially provide internet (data) and voice services using the iDirect platforms. iDirect, a subsidiary of VT Systems, is a global leader
in IP-based satellite communications providing technology that enables
our 350+ partners to optimize their networks, differentiate and expand
their businesses. The iDirect Intelligent Platform™ allows our partners
to run their entire business operations more efficiently via single,
unified IP-based satellite architecture, whether it’s providing core IP
applications to the enterprise or specialized services to any number of
diverse vertical markets.
The venture is a collaboration between the Federal Government owed NigComSat-1R and VT systems. The NigComSat-1R is a replacement to the earlier launched NigComSat 1 and government is looking at opportunities to provide other Electronic based social services such as E-government, Tele-Education and support the IP-based needs of it's various agencies especially their Broadband internet requirements.
NigComSat 1 was launched at 16:01 GMT on 13 May 2007, aboard a Chinese Long March 3B carrier rocket, from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in China. The spacecraft was operated by NigComSat
Nigerian Communication Satellite Ltd. On November 11, 2008, NigComSat-1
failed in orbit after running out of power due to an anomaly in its
solar array. NigComSat-1R was successfully launched on December 19, 2011 as a replacement to the NigComSat-1.
